Randy Wolford Media specialist

Educational Background

Mr. Wolford graduated from Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock Pennsylvania with dual majors in Library Science K-12 /Elementary Education K-8 after relocating to Maryland he began work as the librarian at Kingsville, he has since graduated from Towson University with a Master of Science in Educational Technology. He recently graduated from Johns Hopkins with a Master of Science in Instructional Technology.

He currently holds an advanced professional certificate form the state of Maryland in Library Science K-6 & Elementary Education K-8.

Program Highlights
K-3

  • Discovering the Black-eyed Susan award winning books and voting for a favorite title is a major event each year.
  • Basic library skills= book care, vocabulary, location of materials.
  • Picture Books, we share many types of picture books through out the school year.
4-5
  • We share selected Black-eyed Susan award winning books for older readers.
  • Students keep a library journal of each week’s book selections throughout the school year.
  • Types and genres of children’s literature are discussed such as Folk,
    Fairy and Tall Tales, Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Biography legends, Myths.

How often do my children come to the library for book selection?
Currently they come once a week for a 20-minute book selection period
How long is the checkout period for materials?
Periods of two weeks even though classes come each week this provides a week safety net for materials that are overdue.
What happens when a book is lost or destroyed?
Material borrowed from the library that becomes lost or is destroyed must be paid for before the summer vacation.

The period is 50 minutes long what happens for the other 30 minutes?
They have an age appropriate lesson from the scope and sequence below, these lessons vary as to content items such as book care, library etiquette, and al types of materials are shared with emphasis on The Black-Eyed Susan award nominees for Grades K-2.

The Intermediate grades keep Library Journals that consist of a record of materials selected for home and classroom use. We also emphasize Black- Eyed Susan Award nominees
What is the Black-Eyed Susan award?
Each year Librarians in Maryland nominate titles they have read for inclusion in the Black-Eyed Susan list of nominees for that particular year the students in Maryland school then read the books or have them read to them. In April of any given year, a vote is taken and a winner selected for a Picture Book grades 4-6 & 6-9 & High School categories.
