Patricia Parker,
Reading Specialist
My role as reading specialist provides support
to students in five main areas of reading: phonemic awareness,
phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Students are
referred to me based on daily classroom performance on reading
assignments and assessments.
Frequently Asked Questions:
My child’s teacher has recommended that he work
with you. Does this mean he is failing reading?
A referral to me does not necessarily mean reading failure.
It indicates weaknesses in certain areas that can be further supported
through pull-out intervention and/or remediation.
Will I be notified if my child works with you?
Yes. If a child is to be part of a regularly scheduled program
with me, a parent letter is sent home explaining the details of
the program. A tear-off slip is included that is signed and returned
to me. For students who see me periodically to review recent assessments
or to review skills that are areas of weakness for them, a note
is sent home letting parents know that I have worked with the
child. Suggestions for ways to support the skills at home are
often included. This note also contains a tear-off portion that
is signed and returned to me.
